PNP ready for ECQ, warns protesters

By Jastine Angelo Don

QUEZON CITY — The Philippine National Police (PNP)  is ready to enforce strict movement control in Metro Manila which is placed under the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) from August 6 to August 20 to stop the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

According to PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the implementation of quarantine control, such as the imposition of stricter border control and longer curfew hours, is not new to the police forces and the public

He continuously urged the public to adhere to the standard health protocols against the COVID-19.  He likewise strongly warns some groups to stop their plan of holding  mass actions this month to protest the national government’s vaccination program.

“Nakarating sa aking kaalaman ang pang-hihimok ng ilan nating kababayan sa social media na samahan sila sa isang planong magsagawa ng malawakang protesta laban sa isinasagawang free vaccination ng ating pamahalaan,” the Police Chief said.

The Inter-agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) guidelines prohibit public gatherings like mass protests during the ECQ.

Eleazar believes that mass protests will only endanger public health amidst the threat of the Delta variant.

“Hinihikayat natin ang mga kababayan nating ito na huwag nang ituloy ang kanilang plano dahil hindi natin papayagan ito lalo na sa panahon ng ECQ. Your right to hold protest actions end when the right of the most number of our kababayan to be safe from COVID-19 starts,” he added.

The Department of Health (DOH) on August 3, reported 216 Delta variant cases, 17 of which are active. Philippine Information Agency
