ILIGAN CITY–The Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) reported that crime volume in the city has increased by 43.25 percent (%) during the second quarter of 2021 despite the drop in both index and non-index crimes.

PCol. Wilbur Salaguste, acting ICPO director, said the crime volume went up by 218 from 504 in the second quarter last year to 722 in the same quarter this year.

He attributed the increase to the rise of traffic incidents from 259 in 2020 to 504 in 2021 or an increase of 94.59%.

“We will be looking into this and coordinate with the traffic unit of the local government to prevent the occurrence of more traffic incidents in Iligan City,” he said.

Meanwhile, index crimes or crimes against persons and property dropped by 46% from 27 last year to 50 this year. Non-index crimes or violations of special laws also slightly decreased by 2.05% from 195 to 191.

Salaguste said the decline in both the index and non-index crimes was due to proactive measures and sustained police interventions of ICPO specifically on the implementation of Simultaneous Anti-Criminality Law Enforcement Operations (SACLEO) and conduct of One Time Big Time (OTBT) operations.
