MARAWI CITY, June 5–Fifty-six youths from this city and nearby municipalities in Lanao del Sur province participated in crafting plans on youth, peace and security in a workshop organized by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) through its Social Healing and Peacebuilding (SHAPE) Department.

Lance Lantod, president of  Youth for Peace Movement and Development Philippines – Lanao del Sur Chapter, shared that he was motivated to join the activity to share plans for the province.

“I am one of the participants to raise my voice sa pagpalano kung ano ang dapat implement sa [in planning what should be implemented in] Lanao del Sur.  Para sa amin this is good sa aming kabataan para malaman ng gobyerno kung ano ang hinanaing namin [For us, this is good for the youth so that the government will be aware of our sentiments],” said Lantod.

Lantod pointed out the importance of engaging the youth in peacebuilding activities to prevent them from being recruited by local terrorist groups.

“Importante ito para dumami ang peace advocate sa Lanao na tumutulong sa pagsugpo sa mga terrorist para mas dumami ang tumulong sa PCVE in Lanao del Sur,” he added.

[This is important to increase the number of peace advocates in Lanao who help in the suppression of terrorists so that more people help in PCVE in Lanao del Sur.]

Abdani Managa from Sultan Dumalondong expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by OPAPP.

“I am grateful na naging parte ako sa event na ito. [I am grateful that I have been part of this event.] Nagpapasalamat ako sa [I am thankful sa] OPAPP because I have learned a lot from this productive event..

Meanwhile, 17-year-old peace advocate Princess Asiah Samporna said that she joined the activity in order to know more about leadership which she can use in the future.

“Importante kasi sa near future na kami mamahala, we need to know more and we need to search deeper. Para sa next generation na kung may problema ngayon,  hindi na mangyayari sa susunod,” she said.

[It is important because in the near future when we are the ones to manage, we need to know more and we need to search deeper. For the next generation, if there is a problem now, it will not happen again.]

Anchored on the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250, the Regional Youth Peace Consultation on Formulation of action plan on youth, peace and security aims to gather recommendations and full participation of the youth in crafting the regional action plan on youth, peace and security.
