MANILA: Senator Christopher Lawrence Go on Friday urged his fellow Filipinos to be united to ensure the successful fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Go made the call as he acknowledged that public cooperation is necessary to combat the Covid-19.
Now that we are facing challenges due to Covid-19, let us not forget to exhibit unity and teamwork),” he said.
As of Friday, the Philippines has recorded 24,787 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with 1,052 deaths and 5,454 recoveries.
Go issued the statement the same day the country observed the 122nd anniversary of the Philippines’ independence from Spanish rule.
The country’s first president, Emilio Aguinaldo, proclaimed the Philippines’ independence from Spain in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898.
The proclamation of independence made the Philippines as Asia’s first free and united nation from the clout of Western powers.
Joining the Independence Day celebration, Go said the sacrifices of the country’s forefathers for the country’s liberty should be remembered.
Go also said the values they had exhibited should be emulated.
The Philippines is a free nation because our heroes fought for our freedom. Let us value their sacrifices and the freedom we have because of them),” he said.
With a free nation, Filipinos would enjoy a better life, Go said.
If we become a united nation, we will enjoy a healthier and more prosperous future),” he said.
