MANILA: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Davao Occidental on Saturday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 211 kilometers southeast of Sarangani at 9:06 p.m.

Instrumental intensity I was recorded in Alabel, Malungon and Kiamba, Sarangani, and in Tupi, South Cotabato.

Phivolcs deployed around 100 instruments or intensity meter to measure the ground acceleration.

Renato Solidum Jr., director of Phivolcs, earlier said acceleration record is converted to intensities and “what is being measured is called the instrumental intensity.”

Aftershocks are possible, but not expecting any damages from the magnitude 5.6 quake, according to Phivolcs.

On May 27, Phivolcs monitored a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that also hit Davao Occidental.

The earthquake was also tectonic in origin and traced to 51 kilometers southwest of Sarangani.
