Ranao Star, IPDM hold workshop on journalism

MARAWI CITY, December 20 – Ranao Star Philippines (RSP) and Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) conducted a four-day training workshop on basic writing and practical journalism on December 19-22, 2019 at the IPDM Hall in the Mindanao State University campus here.

The event’s participants were highschool and college students, teachers, schools officials and municipal information officers from various towns in Lanao del Sur.

With its theme: “Harnessing Communication Skills through Journalism and Digital Literacy,” the activity was aimed to enhance the skills of the participants from English basic writing to the basic guidelines on blogging and vlogging.

RSP founder and editor-in-chief emiritus Masiding Noor Yahya opened the training workshop and welcomed the participants, lauding them for their efforts in coming for the workshop.

Prof. Sorhaila Latip-Yusoph, RSP co-founder, gave the lecture on Basic English Writing.

Latip-Yusoph emphasized the importance of knowledge of the basic rules in grammar, capitalization, punctuation and diction as the first steps in producing journalistic write-ups.

“Everything we know or believed in is shaped by someone else. Either subconsciously or consciously. We have engrained sets of belief that we assume to be true” is the opening phrase of Dr. Acram A. Latiph, Executive Director of IPDM.

Latiph enlightened the participants about his lecture on Choice Architecture and its relevance to journalism.

Yahya also discussed Islamic perspective in journalism. He stated that journalism must be based on facts just like preaching in Islam which is based in the Holy Qur’an and the Hadiths.

He said, “If you are a journalist, you must acknowledge the sources of the information you write or speak of either in announcing religious teachings.”

“And you must quote reliable sources of informations,” he added.

The second day of the training workshop was started with a lecture on legal and ethical issues in journalism by Marawi City assistant fiscal Ating D. Diacat.

Diacat discussed the freedom rights enjoyed by everyone and the limits prescribed by law.

He also stressed the meaning and scope of libel in connection with new and existing laws like the Revised Penal Code and the Anti-CyberCrime Law.

Ms. Jahara A. Solaiman of the English Department of the MSU Main College of Social Sciences and Humanities, provided the participants with the baic steps in news writing and feature writing.

Solaiman ended her lecture with a workshop wherein participants were tasked to come up with a news article or a feature article for critiquing.

The organizers of the event assured the participants that the remaining days of the training workshop will be full of informative lectures from distingues resource persons. (RSP
